“You can starve a company,” one founder told me as we talked.
He didn’t want to do it to his, but he was concerned it might already be happening. He had founded companies before, and they would always hit a limit…capping at $2m on the first, $16m on the next, and this one was in the 9 figures. It was a big progression, and the company was a monster — but it was still growing slower than he knew it was capable of…and he knew enough to know that he was the reason.
Depriving your company or career of what it needs to survive and thrive is a mistake many people make in their progression — often without even realizing it. So how can you know it’s happening? Usually, you start to hit walls. You begin to entertain the thoughts of, “Oh, this is all this company can ever be,” or “This is the limit of my career.”
In both cases, you’re probably wrong. Something is off, but you’re not quite sure what it is or how to correct it. You know you have more in the tank; you are more creative, more expansive, and have a lot more to push forward on. However, your company or career may not reflect that because you’ve been depriving it of yourself.
We tend to downplay aggression because we’re afraid it’s a bad thing, but — in many cases — it’s quite the opposite.
This edition is about not stopping yourself from the heights your company and career can actually reach — and the actionable steps you need to take to make it happen. It’s time to step into the driver’s seat, tap into some necessary aggression, and make a critical decision: Are you going to starve the beast? Or are you going to feed it?
