If there is one thing that helps the highest move into the most elite spaces, it is strong communication. As one CEO I spoke with years ago told me, “They should know my thoughts before I think them.”

Whew — sounds harsh, doesn’t it? It’s not. This is exactly right.

There is actually a lot of truth to this in practical brass-tacks application that revealed why this CEO was so good at what he did. His team had deep understanding of how he thought, and could anticipate very important moves in the business in their roles. 

Good relationships are all based on some amount of “psychological anticipation.” From your spouse anticipating your cup of coffee in the morning, exactly how you like it, to a coworker who handles a challenge at the company while you were away — exactly how you would have wanted it done. 

Anticipation and understanding how you think, what you like, what you want, and (at times) how you want it done is foundational to moving fast. It can make your experience in the world better — no matter who you are. 

For this CEO, I got to see how strong communication, done effectively, was an absolute success replicator in his organization and how it could be a replicator to anyone. Since meeting with him, I have seen it a thousand times over — always with really solid results. I’ve also seen how it can create problem points when it doesn’t exist.
