People at the very top are masters of leverage. They know who they are, what they’re good at, and how to get things done that scale beyond what they could do as an individual.
The most natural advantage on the field is often locked in what people already contain. In business, there will always be a thousand ways to fail, but using leverage is one way to outperform everyone else.
As one CTO said to me, “I hire the smartest people I can who want to be a part of building a rocketship — not riding one.”
But, unlike most things you’ll read, the true leverage is more than simply hiring and building the right team — though that is undoubtedly a part of it — it’s what you do yourself. It’s utilizing everything at your disposal.
The thing about people at the top is that you only see them today…but, if you listen to their stories, they’ve learned to be good at leverage — and it’s been a factor in why they are where they are.
It doesn’t matter where you’re starting, or if you’re already well on your way. There is no one at the top who doesn’t understand leverage, so this is a piece to begin to examine your own. Most people are missing some of the very things that would help them move faster, get bigger, and really pick up scale if they want it.
