I was talking with a CEO recently who was lamenting about his executive team. "I've got this position I need to fill," he said, "and I’d really like to promote from within, but no one really stands out.”
When I asked him what was missing, his answer was revealing: "I have a really good team, but they’re all just doing a job, you know? They’re not really in the game. They’re not owners. They don’t play to win.”
...and that's the thing about promotions. What did he mean by that? A lot of people who want promotions genuinely don’t know what their boss is really looking for.
