“I don’t want that stuff in my head, I can’t be around them.”
Years ago, I heard a CEO say this about a member of his own executive team. Can you imagine? Someone on your team that you can’t stand to even sit around the table with, but it happens more often than you’d think.
Unfortunately, these naysayers are everywhere, whether you realize it or not — Consistently negative, skeptical, and pessimistic people…and they’re usually the first ones to say things can’t be done.
This isn’t about dissent, which can be productive. Instead, naysaying is about negativity, small thinking, and cynicism. Mediocre to small thinkers will join with naysayers’ cynicism, which makes them easy to spot, but the best performers I work with avoid them like a contagious disease. They want nothing to do with them, and neither should you.
In this edition, I’m going to challenge you to think bigger and insist on better. We’re going to take a pretty radical approach to your headspace and naysayers, so let’s get ruthless on what to look for, what to do, and tactics that work.
