The uncompromising person is deeply misunderstood. Sometimes seen as a jerk, a know-it-all or arrogant, they are none of these things. They are self-assured people locked into a vision of what they know something can be — and they refuse to move away from it.
You want to move them? It will not happen.
Being uncompromising is a trait that underscores the biggest names you read about, and it’s also present in the biggest clients I tend to have. One founder, who has risen through the various rounds of venture funding, told me, “I know exactly what this can be, and I see it.”
His company has grown tremendously. It’s profitable, and he’s in a position to take it further, financing or not. He is now beginning to prep for IPO, and I have no doubt that he’ll make it happen in the coming years. He had a vision — and while he’s taken some turns regarding how he’s reaching that vision — the evidence is clear that what he saw was correct.
Over the years, I’ve found that this trait is not exclusive to great founders or CEOs. It is the stuff of great executives, entrepreneurs, and creators of all stripes – people who do it their own way and capture something unique and special because of it. They have a very clear picture of what they want to do and often how they want to do it.
Everyone wants a piece of them, and everyone secretly wants to be like them once they’ve reached success…but having what it takes to relentlessly hold to something long-term is not for the faint of heart.
Maybe you’re already a killer in your space, but if you want to be more uncompromising — if you want to be locked into your vision and determined to make it happen — then here’s a look behind the curtain into the good, the bad, and the ugly of what it takes.
