Fitting in is overrated.
The biggest wins don’t go to the people who blend in. They go to the outliers—the people outside the norm who lean into what makes them different. Far too often, people are tempted to shave down their edges, suppress their quirks, and deny their differences, all in the name of becoming a face in the crowd.
Wouldn’t you rather lead the crowd? Be outside of it all? Be unique or one of a kind? Everyone you likely have admired, read about or study is a person who was different.
The “different” you’re feeling? It’s the most natural thing in the world for everyone who has done things others just don’t do—the people who aren’t average.
It might be challenging today, but it’s to your advantage in the future. Quirks and differences are oddly embraced after the building and some wins, but not in the early days. Know that this is the usual cycle.
Double down on what makes you different—In your career, in your business.
It’s the outliers who change everything about what they do, not the average.
