There is a saying that “you teach people how to treat you.” That’s true in work and life. But you also teach people the expectation of operation in the field that surrounds you. The work environment, the culture, and even on a commute.
Even if you don’t realize it, you set an example as you move about your world.
How you treat others. How you allow others to treat you. What you expect. What you tolerate. All of it, is an example.
How you move in the spaces you occupy will often determine how others move, and people follow the leader.
If people see you shrinking from the important things, they often shrink too - or take advantage. If they see you taking on challenges quickly, collaborating when necessary, hearing different opinions and confident in what you do - they often take the risk to do the same.
Strength and confidence are a privilege. If you’ve got it, use it with intention. Bring others up. Stand firm for things you believe in, and create the world you want to be a part of.
Remember, people will follow your lead. Know that, internalize it, and lead them where you want them to go.
