I’ve previously touched on the importance of being a self-starter, an autodidactic person (a self-learner) — and the importance of sharpening your axe personally to keep on top of your field or expertise. But I’d like to emphasize how important it is to look outside of the areas that are explicitly connected to your field.
Your industry is undoubtedly important. For example, if you’re a marketer or a developer, you should always be paying attention to new things in that field on the horizon. However, paying attention to the technologies and thoughts of those outside of your field or area of industry, can expand your vision - help you make connections you would never have seen, and bring some fresh eyes back to your own industry — and keep you from thinking like everyone else.
Want to stay innovative? Don’t get trapped in the echo chamber of your industry.
Step out and step up.
