The holidays are rapidly approaching, so how can you be sure they are well spent?
You might be taking a step back from working full speed, spend time with your family, and take a proper break…but there are good uses of the white space and that extra time, particularly to reflect on the year behind you.
Did it go as planned? What went well? Poorly? Better than expected? (and how did you contribute to these?)
Do you see any patterns at work or at home you want to tighten or make better?
Are there any problem areas? Strengths? Challenges?
What skills have you developed and which would be important to really tackle and develop in the coming year?
When sports teams and athletes examine their wins and losses, they often “play back the tape.” They review the games they’ve played, and it makes them better.
As you take some time this holiday season to go for a walk, spend some extra time thinking, don’t pull punches with yourself, and do some review. It’s time to play the tape, take it all in—the good, the bad, the ugly—and analyze it. Drop your ego, get honest with yourself, and strengthen your plan for the year ahead.
Don’t wait for some arbitrary date.
Use the time you’ve got to reflect productively, and start today for the coming year ahead.
