Today is a great day to absolutely destroy the box that others have tried to put you in.
Sameness is everywhere. The same business advice, see the same things promoted, heck on Instagram people often *look* the same. People like it when others fit in neat little boxes, and you have likely felt social pressure to fit into a tidy little box yourself…or someone has tried to stuff you in one.
If you allow it, this will flatten you into a mold, and you will quickly become a cookie-cutter version of the next person. It is instinctual to want to blend in—and while it might make you feel some social relief—it will also make you…common.
In my experience, people at the highest levels operate differently. They carry a unique edge to how they move about the world that sets them apart. Sometimes they’re quirky, often they hold strong beliefs, but they’re always unshakeably themselves.
I will never forget an interview one of my clients was doing where he was asked about “taking action,” and the poor interviewer seemed stunned by his answer:
“At my level, everyone is good at execution…so what’s your magic now?!”
Take a moment to think about what he meant. Taking action is what you have to do in order to reach his level, but it doesn’t make you special. For him, “taking action” was ordinary.
Every high-level CEO has it.
Every professional athlete has it.
Every success story has it.
The magic is found in the things you just can’t copy.
A good example? Steve Jobs. Sure, he “executed,” but that wasn’t what made him phenomenal. His talent was seeing the future, not compromising on it, and embracing creativity and innovation in a way that made him both distinctive and unforgettable. It was his Midas Touch, and he stamped a generation with it.
As we go about our lives in the real world, people feel all sorts of pressures to conform, and it’s not just reserved for our teenage years. Adults feel it in their careers, the ideas they explore, and even how they express themselves. We’re trained out of the magic we embraced as kids—the excitement, creativity, and imagination that led us to build forts, carry swords, and tell the world about our dreams—but this spark isn’t lost…it’s just forgotten.
If you want to go parabolic, it’s time to reconnect with that excitement and creativity. You have to actually stand out with something unique and extraordinary all your own. You will always get pressured to conform, to be something you’re not, but great people aren’t like anyone else.
Creating your own Midas Touch is radical stuff, but it’s also where average transforms into extraordinary. Are you going to let yourself make it happen?
